A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange lodging upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was taking place and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could spend the night at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I caught public transport and began walking in the direction of the casino, thinking it was a place to spend the night somewhere that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next day, however, being a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more individuals with such compassion.
It seems I seemed lost as a female student saw me loitering in the city center and asked if I was OK. I recounted my situation and immediately she said I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: one of the stuffed baguettes she had taken home her part-time job. This gave me warm shower facilities and a protected spot and safe for the evening.
In retrospect, it’s clear to me the significant risk she accepted as a woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she offered that help – and remain deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not attending that university, and I didn’t meet her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish karma has rewarded her generosity many times over. We could all use more folks with such compassion.
