Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement say initial examinations show the liquid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.

An important political figure stated the attack left him speechless and needed to be solved promptly.

"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right attack five years ago," he wrote on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
