As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Various sections of Delhi showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the safe threshold established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, representing fifteen to twenty times higher than safe standards.

Firecracker Restrictions and New Developments

Since 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous haze that engulfs the metropolis as winter sets in.

Yet earlier this year, the current city leadership approached the supreme court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, the court complied with the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited hours throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi showed contamination peaking around late evening to the most severe readings seen during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in across the border following the festivities.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of air contamination in the city have persisted as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to seventy percent above the most severe records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Pollution Factors

This crisis in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the city as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical toll on the nearly 33 million people calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple research.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely fatalities per year in the city.
