Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The clip, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who formerly acted in defense or intelligence positions.
"Like us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and defend this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the 90-second video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can reject improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you must decline improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that violate the legal system or our national charter."
Trump's Furious Response
The recorded statement appeared to prompt a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Answer
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats published a joint announcement condemning the remarks.
"Political violence has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our nation with exceptional loyalty and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Strong Response
The representatives who participated in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who value this nation and swore an vow to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and censure the president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is demanding the execution of public representatives."
He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the government instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also reportedly told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can cause casualties, it can lead to disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially supporting."
