Educating a Toddler to Develop into an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Investment?

Child education concept
The company behind the listing claims that what seems like "extravagance or peculiarity" is actually "purposeful commitment in early-stage education".

"A household residing in North London seeks an extraordinary and skilled educator to support their youngest child on his early path to becoming an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this post, you might readily skip the term "beginning" as mere a turn of phrase.

But, it could be the crucial part of this distinctive position posting, as it aims to find a tutor for a 12-month-old.

Many of submissions have already been received since the unidentified family advertised their call for the £180,000 per year tutor, who needs to be "a uniquely qualified person".

Over the last few weeks, the advert has received interest in the media, with many wondering why?

Progressive Approach

The CEO, chief executive of an education consultancy, which is helping the family in their quest, said that in spite of early scepticism, he found the idea "forward-looking", and "progressive".

When he consulted the family, he said they appreciated the unconventional aspect of their requirement, and how young their son is.

But, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to get a tutor, as they had held off until their older child was five, and by that stage "cultural bias had already taken hold".

What precisely did the family mean by "cultural leaning"?

It's "everything", the expert responded. "The way you eat, the way you speak".

He stated the elder child had absorbed "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural habits. The family informed him they hoped to prevent this pattern to happen again with their new baby.

The strategy: To hire a English tutor, who needs to speak with Received Pronunciation, to shape the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency state the advert has initiated a larger discussion about how households perceive education, privilege and the role of family background in learning.

Osmotic Learning

"A lot of the learning at the start here is rather absorbed naturally," stated the expert.

It's by means of this subtle influence that the family are hoping the child will adopt the British traits they wish to impart.

The consultant explained the tutor had to be someone who attended "the right kinds of schools – the same kinds of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The instructor simply needs to be the suitable individual, they'll be doing things they aren't even aware they're doing, just naturally," he commented.

Expense Not a Factor

The family told him the successful candidate should ideally also have knowledge of or enthusiasm in horse riding, winter sports, the arts and musical activities so as to shape the child in a broad spectrum of interests.

Additionally though, he stated the family hoped the tutor to sign up the child on a range of classes so the child would be "equestrian training and picking up an tool by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's minds, assisting their son become a "English gentleman" will bring about success and provide access.

"For all the rights and wrongs of that, because it's certainly a status symbol," he adds.

But, despite all this tutelage in "Britishness", could the child pick up what is termed cultural leaning from the globally influenced family he resides with anyway?

"Certainly", replied the CEO. "The family realize this may not work, but they've simply adopted the view of, 'why not attempt it and let's go as quickly as we can', because the expense of it is not relevant," he stated.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

There are some in the tutoring industry who share these doubts.

Peter Cui, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who also offer individual instructors, commented that "the journey of embracing two identities, or actually, becoming oneself, is something that must be lived into, not engineered."

Peter explained that he had emigrated from the Far East to the United Kingdom at the time of seven, and had been raised experiencing and embodying dual heritages. He continued to be educated at a prestigious UK institution.

The executive was the pioneer originating from China to be selected to the role of Finance Head of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The concept that one individual can function as a representation of Britishness, someone who can in some way transplant the attributes of a British gentleman upon a infant child, strikes me as optimistic and impractical," he commented.

"In my experience, having a typically English tutor from babyhood will will not automatically achieve the goal they desire.

"I never had such a tutor, and yet I have been fortunate enough to enjoy several of the situations they hope for their son."

He continued: "The reality is, personal identity should not be dictated from the outside influences; it must be chosen, and it must be internally driven."

Purchasing UK Culture

Of course, UK identity is something Adam hopes can be educated – and sold.

"I think the fact that the world holds us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
