Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
