New York Introduces Reporting Tool for Public to Report ICE Footage After Arrests of Four US Citizens
The state attorney general has introduced a fresh online portal asking residents to submit images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This move comes just a shortly after a significant ICE raid disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting large-scale demonstrations.
US Citizens Held During Raid
A US congressman disclosed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were detained and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following the enforcement action. Demonstrations occurred in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen deserves to live without fear," state officials declared in a statement.
"If you witnessed and captured federal operations during the raid, I encourage you to provide that footage with my office. We are pledged to examining these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."
Submission Process
The platform includes fields to submit images and video footage of the incident, plus a field to note where it occurred. When submitting, submitters must mark a box that states that "the office might employ any evidence provided in a public document, including in a legal proceeding or public report."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say included more than 50 federal agents, took place in a well-known area of NYC where counterfeit products and merchandise are sold daily en masse – frequently to tourists.
Videos of the incident reveal multiple covered and weaponized officers restraining and arresting a person, and pushing back onlookers. Throngs of locals trailed the personnel down the sidewalks. An armored truck was observed traveling down the urban roads.
Official Reactions
During a Wednesday press conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a lawmaker, said that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be arrested for no reason." He clarified the citizens were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he stated. "This constitutes a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is simply a justification to incite violence for this administration to utilize the armed forces to halt violence that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the federal action quickly spread – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the operation, including the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the federal government selects authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It must stop," a contender wrote.
New York City advocacy organizations spoke out also.
"Federal officers targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and protective equipment to focus on small merchants attempting to earn income. This raid had no connection to community security and everything to do with intimidating residents and areas," remarked the head of a rights organization.
ICE Policies
ICE policy prohibits the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it refrains from apprehend American nationals. Yet, external research has discovered that over 170 citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the start of the existing leadership.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in New York and across the US this year.
An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Demonstrations targeting ICE are commonplace along with accusations of aggression and abusive practices.
Recently, a submission provided by civil rights groups stated inadequate care of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
