Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."
