The Former Congresswoman Establishes History as First Female State Leader

Over 250 years, Virginia has seen 74 state executives, each one of them male. This week, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the first female governor in Virginia's annals.

Centered Around Cost-of-Living Concerns and Strategic Opposition

Ex- US congresswoman and Central Intelligence Agency operative succeeded with a campaign that focused on cost-of-living issues and deliberately challenged Trump-era measures rather than the individual.

Beginnings and Education

Born in the Garden State on August 7, 1979, she moved to a Virginia community at thirteen. Her dad was an army veteran who later worked in law enforcement; her mother was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She enrolled in the Virginia's flagship university, receiving a diploma in French studies. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a substitute teacher before embarking on a life of service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” Spanberger informed attendees at a gathering in the city of Norfolk last Saturday.

Government Roles

At the Postal Service, she handled involving drugs, abusers and financial criminals. She served legal orders, frequently being the sole female on the arrest team. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and specialized in anti-terror efforts, serving undercover and internationally.

Life Change

In that year, she and her spouse, an engineer, faced a decision. Living on the Pacific coast, they were considering another foreign posting. They took out a world map and asked their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we chose to shift from a path of service to country, to local engagement because she was right. All our relatives lives in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in her home state, she participated in an advocacy organization, which addresses firearm incidents, and founded a youth group. In 2017, she resolved to campaign for the House, which people told her was a “crazy endeavour” because no Democrat had won the congressional seat in 50 years.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was doing with his executive power and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I noticed my member of Congress consistently vote to repeal the healthcare law. And I knew I had to do something. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she quickly became linked to the centrist group, a alliance of moderate and fiscally moderate Democrats. She concentrated on less visible matters: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting narcotics trade and veterans’ services.

She built a standing for working with opposing parties and was consistently rated as the most bipartisan representative of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she felt turned off moderate voters, cautioning her party against partisan language that could be weaponised in contested districts.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a member of the “centrist alliance” in contrast to the progressive “squad” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

State Leadership Bid

In late 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would instead run for governor in 2025.

Her campaign focused on themes of public service, support for schools and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her CIA background gave her authority on national security issues and she described government work as a vocation rather than a job.

Win Over Opponent

This enabled her to counter rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on cultural issues, notably the claim that she is an radical on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

The governor-elect, who maintained that individual districts should determine whether trans youth can compete in competitive sports, portrayed her rival as the candidate more misaligned with the middle of the Virginia electorate.
