The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside his partner, announced that he plans to independently develop this new product within an individual collection highlighting issues the company was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain how Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem of support for Palestinians due to its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which originally established several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
