The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
