The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
