The Three Lions to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground
The England national team will embark on their Euro 2028 journey at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they secure the expected passage for a championship staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
City’s stadium has not staged an English men’s match since May 2016, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to host the Three Lions for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Launch and Demonstration
The championship was unveiled at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the organizing bodies were barracked as they arrived the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded the Israeli team to be kicked out from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were displayed with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Timeline
The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be staged at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve Wales if they make it.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to families and help engage a broader range of viewers.
Qualifying Teams
The Ireland are scheduled to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
Each host nation’s squad will participate in the qualification process; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Venues and Elimination Phase
Villa Park and Spurs’ ground round out the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight held at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in Belfast, which was excluded as a host city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.
Official Statement
“It will be a championship for the followers and a celebration of everything we value about the sport – its emotion and capacity to bring people together.”
More than three million admissions, a record for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be released to attendees.
