What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
